    Fort York will open its doors for this annual celebration of history and architecture. Enjoy special tours of some of Toronto’s oldest architecture and original War of 1812 buildings or stroll the grounds of this National Historic Site.

    What better way to celebrate Victoria Day than to visit the birthplace of Toronto. Tours, kids’ activities such as soldiers’ drill, demonstrations of Georgian-era cooking techniques in one of the oldest kitchens in Toronto, English country dancing.

  • Battle of York Commemoration Day (2014)

    Sun. April 27, 10 am to 5 pm
    Discover Fort York National Historic Site and commemorate the 201st anniversary of the Battle of York fought on 27 April 1813. Enjoy War of 1812-era drill and musket firing exercises; Battle of York, Fortification, and 1812 Barracks tours; demonstrations of Georgian-era cooking techniques. Step into the Soldiers’ Barracks brought to life by period animators. Children can learn the marching and musket drill practiced by the Upper Canada Militia in 1812. Learn about English Country dancing with the York Regency Dancers. A special walking tour focusing on the Battle of York will begin at the entrance to Fort York at 11 am and 2 pm. Using the Fort, Garrison Common, and areas of the original shoreline it will highlight the dramatic battle that took place here 201 years ago.

  • Fort York War of 1812 March Break (2014)

    Mon. to Fri. March 10 to 14, 10 am to 3 pm
    Bring the kids down to the fort during March Break for fun-filled activities. Families can learn about Fort York and the War of 1812 through colourful exhibits, costumed education staff, tours, and 1812-related activities. Children can dress up, try cooking in the kitchen, practice musket and sword drills like an 1812 soldier, or learn about music from the War of 1812. Timed and ongoing activities offer education and entertainment for the whole family. Guides and audio tours are available in our Museum Store which also carries a wide selection of souvenirs and books for all ages.This event is recommended for ages 3 to12.

  • Moving Mountains: The No. 2 Construction Battalion and African Canadian Experience During the First World War (2014)

    People of African origins have been part of North American history since the late 1500s. Many served with distinction in the military as professional soldiers, volunteers and militiamen. Their contribution to Canada's national defense in times of war and peace has earned them an important place in our country's history. Join Lt Danielle Pittman, Canadian Armed Forces, as she explores the history of the No. 2 Construction Battalion CEF during the First World War. The predominantly Black unit served with distinction overseas during "The Great War."
    Authentic Great War-era refreshments will be provided by Fort York Volunteer Historic Cooks after the talk.
