For African Canadians, the American invasions of Upper Canada during the War of 1812 posed a dangerous threat to their lives and freedoms. In response, African Canadians, despite representing a small minority of the population, played an active part in the defence of the province. African Canadians contributed to the defence of the province in a variety of roles throughout the war. This presentation will seek to place their service in its military and historical contexts, and explore the roles of African Canadians in some of the key events of the War of 1812 in Upper Canada.
Gareth Newfield is a former historian and researcher with Parks Canada and the Canadian War Museum. A specialist in colonial era Canadian military history, he has written a number of articles and publications on the War of 1812. One of his particular focuses has been the Coloured Corps, the only segregated unit of African Canadians to serve in the defence of Upper Canada during the war.

The kids can join the cooks in the Officers' Mess kitchen to create traditional gingerbread cookies. In this hands-on-workshop, kids will use period cooking utensils and tools to sift flour, crush cinnamon, cloves or allspice, pound sugar and grate nutmeg and ginger as they prepare an 1800's gingerbread recipe. Samples can be taken home - if they last that long! Wookshop is limited to 15 participants. Sign up at the Museum Store.

Sun. November 11, 10:45 am for the procession 
All soldiers of the Toronto Garrison who fell in the War of 1812, the Rebellion Crises, the Crimean War, the Northwest Rebellion, the South African (Boer) War; the two World Wars, and recent conflicts around the globe will be remembered and honoured at one of this city’s most evocative Remembrance Day services at the Strachan Avenue Military Cemetery on Garrison Road.
Free admission to the ceremony, and free admission to the fort until 12:30 pm.
